Argentina Details
Mention Argentina and people think of solitary gauchos, sultry tango dancers, or maybe Madonna as Evita.
While Argentina continues to be a popular tourist destination, your study abroad experience will give you the true flavor of this intriguing country.
Europe’s influence is strong in Argentina, from urban Buenos Aires to the nation’s passion for soccer. Yet you’ll find Argentina has a vigorous identity of its own, fostering a sophisticated citizenry that places high values on culture, tradition, and hospitality.
You’ll find plenty to explore in Argentina, from first-rate museums, galleries, theaters, and architecture to stunning natural wonders and a variety of landscapes that you will not find anywhere else. The nation’s territorial sweep ranges from Iguaçú Falls in the steamy northeastern rainforest, to glacier-topped mountains and penguin colonies in the south, to the world-famous broad and fertile plains of the Pampas.
Sophisticated and lively Buenos Aires will keep you moving, whether you find yourself strolling down the Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest streets in the world; taking in an opera at the world-renowned Teatro Colón; or sipping mate (a kind of green tea) with friends. You might also take a liking to the country’s homegrown rock music, grooving to icons like Charly Garcia, Fito Paéz, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, and Soda Stereo. AFS Argentina has the capacity to do some placements of students in Uruguay.
18+ University Study
Attend university in Argentina and live with a host family. You will go to a public college or university from August to December and March to June. There are a variety of subjects to study, including history, sociology, psychology, political science, law, communications, math, languages, and veterinary medicine.
Upon your arrival in Buenos Aires, you’ll participate in a three-day orientation with your fellow exchange students. There is a two-week exchange to another university or AFS chapter to experience another part of the country, and an optional trip to Iguazú Falls at an additional cost. A basic knowledge (preferably two years) of Spanish is recommended.
18+ Summer Community Service
Spend a summer doing community service, and live with a host family to gain a better understanding of the culture, and improve your Spanish as well! You might volunteer in a orphanage, help teach soccer to children with disabilities, or work on environmental projects restoring parks.
18+ Summer Homestay
Improve your Spanish in Argentina for the summer and learn about community life by living with a host family. There will be plenty to keep you busy, including picnics, sports, arts, sampling new foods like parillad (mixed grill), camping, listening to different types of national music (from tango to rock), and of course, making new and long-lasting friends.
