Brazil Details :

Come to the country that celebrates life! Living in Brazil is like experiencing a celebration everyday. From Carnaval, one of the world’s most famous celebrations, to the incredibly hospitable nature of the Brazilian people, to the ever-present futebol or soccer culture, Brazil never fails to excite all the senses. Brazil is the largest, most populous, and the only Portuguese-speaking country in Latin America. It is a land of diversity, present in the vast Amazon rainforest, beaches, and cities, as well as in the people who inhabit these places, like native Indians, and people of Portuguese, European, and African ancestry.

You will easily make friends, since Brazilians love to share their culture and learn about others. You can dance the forró, a Brazilian dance that came from the American expression “for all” to one of the many musical dialects that underlies the Brazilian happy-go-lucky nature and penchant for solidarity.

You will be invited to join in soccer matches, traditional dances, festivals, street parades, guitar gatherings, barbecues, parties at the beach, and much more. If you’re up for a challenge, try your hand at capoeira, the 400-year-old Afro-Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, music, dance, and ritual. Family life is important here, so don’t be surprised if many extended family members want to get to know you during your stay. Meals with your host family are important and usually include rice, beans, and meat in delicious combinations. In Brazil, not only will you make friends in your host country, but also with students from around the world who have, like you, chosen Brazil for the experience of a lifetime!

Year or Semester :

During an AFS Brazil program, offered to high school students who wish to experience a country with a diverse cultural background, you may experience the Amazon, UN-protected medieval cities, large urban centers, or learn Portuguese which may help you gain a better understanding about Bossa Nova, Samba, and the other rhythms of Brazil.

Students between 15-and 18-years old will attend carefully selected private or public schools. There will be a compulsory curriculum of 8 to 10 subjects per year that all students must follow. AFS local volunteers may create opportunities for short-term exchanges to different AFS chapters provided the students show good adaptation and school attendance. A regional orientation will be held about six weeks after your arrival orientation. Optional trips are offered through an AFS Brazil third party provider at an additional cost and may include: the Pantanal, one of the largest and most ecologically diverse wetlands on the planet; the amazing Amazon region; and awe-inspiring Iguaçú Falls, the widest waterfall in the world.

Summer Homestay Plus :

This program is designed for 17-to 25-year olds with a spirit of adventure, and an interest in ecology and the environment of the Amazon! In the first two weeks, participants will likely stay with host families in Manaus, the capital of the State of Amazonas and the biggest city in the North region of Brazil. During the last ten days, participants will enjoy the most exciting experience called the Amazon Trip. This trip is designed for people who want to see and experience the Brazilian/Amazonian reality and its mysteries.
