With its beauty and diversity, China is a popular destination for international visitors who wish to make a difference in one corner of the world. Since launching reforms in the late 1970s, China has gone through incredible changes, both politically and economically. What gives this enormous land of gleaming skyscrapers and centuries-old traditions its primary allure? It is the Chinese people. You will become a part of one of the most complex societies in the world by living with a host family and attending an academically elite school.

Students participating on the AFS Year Program to China are pioneers in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. While your host school provides one or two months specially arranged intensive Chinese culture and language classes, you will live with a typical Chinese family, learn to speak Mandarin, share meals together, and gain an intimate understanding of Chinese life that few foreign visitors experience. School uniforms are required and classes are lecture style, with required classes in Mandarin, math, science, and physical education. While schoolwork can be rigorous, extracurricular activities will prove rich and equally rewarding. These may include studying traditional martial arts, participating in sports, or hanging out with your friends. All these activities will help you develop a unique understanding of today’s Chinese society.

Learn Mandarin Chinese, and have the opportunity to share your new language skills with your Chinese host family and friends. You will attend classes at a local school with other students to study Mandarin, along with other fascinating aspects of Chinese culture.
