Colombia Details :
Bogota is the capital of Colombia and of one of the country’s most populated departments (provinces), Cundinamarca. Bogota lies in the heart of a conurbation whose population approached 5 million in 1990, or about 16% of the country’s inhabitants. The area was the main center, called Bacata, of the Chibcha Indians when the Spaniards arrived and conquered it in 1538. This was an expedition under the command of Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada, who set out from the Caribbean coast along the Magdalena valley into Colombia’s interior. The Spanish settlement of Santa Fe de Bogota was established on the site. The presente name is a distortion of the original Indian name.
The main part of Bogota is laid out in a gridiron pattern, with the older part forming its goverment and business center. It is mixture of old and new, with squares (plazas) dominated by seventeenth-century churches and colonial-style buildings that represent some of the finest premodern architecture in South America side by side with modern office buildings and skyscrapers.
