Czech Republic Details :

The Czech Republic— its countryside and cities, its people and history—are the traditional crossroads of Europe, both literally and metaphorically. Because of this, the Czech people are among some of the most open-minded in central Europe. Their capital city, Prague, is world-renowned for its support of contemporary artists and the bohemian lifestyle. This artistic sentiment is found throughout the Czech Republic, especially in the beautiful city of Prague, where some of Europe’s best architecture can be found. Outside of Prague is a wonderful countryside full of farms, forests, fairy-tale villages, and rustic hills sheltering castles.

When you arrive, AFS Czech Republic provides a two-day orientation camp including information on the Czech culture, Czech family, school, and friends. After your orientation, you’ll get to meet your host family. It’s important to note that for some families, especially in villages or small towns, it’s not uncommon for members of the extended family to be living at home, especially grandparents. This, of course, gives you the opportunity to interact with many more people, as well as the chance to discover the local cuisine with a sample of grandmother’s cooking. Meals usually contain meat, along with dumplings, potatoes, or rice with sauces. You’ll also find plenty of activities to engage in, like hiking, skiing, bicycling, visiting historic sites, attending the theater, and participating in cultural events. After your first four weeks, there will be a four-day orientation on the culture shock and getting more detail about your experience so far. They’ll also teach you how to barbecue Czech style!

Year and Semester :

Most students are placed in competitive schools and take courses in German, English, history, physics, chemistry, biology, and math. AFS Volunteers will also organize additional instruction in the Czech language once a week. Although you won’t be taught in English, your school will try to adjust your schedule so courses are not too dependent on the Czech language. Additional instruction in the Czech language is available at an additional cost. Spending time with your new friends will also help you learn the language, and there are extracurricular activities in which you can participate, like sports, drama, or community and youth organization events.
