Finland Details :
Dispel any notions you might have of Finland being a cold, snowy, northern country; it is anything but! Alive with a vibrant culture, outdoor activities, lush landscapes, and the midnight sun, Finland draws the world’s attention for many reasons. Not only is it majestically beautiful, but the pride its people have for high-caliber outdoor sports such as hiking, skiing, and even sailing, brings in countless tourists each year. Finnish culture is also quite colorful with hundreds of arts festivals and a balanced mix of small-town life with modern cities. Finland will stay with you long after your study abroad program. Best known for its capital city, Helsinki, the other bigger cities of Turku, Tampere, and Oulu each possess individual personality. Student’s will be placed anywhere between the northern most village Utsjoki and southern most town Hanko. Finland is a common sense country. Common sense, no fuss, making things work sums up how Finland and the Finns operate. You’ll enjoy exploring family, school, and social life in this breathtakingly beautiful country.
Year and Semester :
The school year is divided into five (sometimes six) terms from August to June, with breaks at Christmas and Easter, a one-week sports vacation mid-winter, and the First-of-May celebration. You will study a few courses intensively each term, including Finnish and/or Swedish, math, science, psychology, art, music, sports, history, and geography. Upon arrival in Helsinki, you will meet your host family. About a month into your stay, there will be an arrival and language orientation to help you get a better grasp on the Finnish language and culture.
Summer Homestay :
Imagine having six weeks in this beautiful country during the summer to enjoy daily life with your host family. Closeness to nature is clearly a national trait. The country is predominantly an unspoiled natural environment with vast forests and almost two hundred thousand lakes. Many host families will take their student to visit their summer cottage by the lake. There is an arrival orientation in Helsinki and an End-of-Stay orientation including a two-day cruise to Tallinn, Estonia, paid for by AFS Finland.
