Honduras Details :

If your interested in a “five star” international experience, then Honduras should be your destination of choice. Honduras is best known for its natural beauty, relaxed pace of life, diverse country and landscape, combined with a unique history of thousands of years of culture and a promising future. This Latin American country has miles of coastline along its north and south borders filled with stunning beaches with the world’s second largest barrier reef, dazzling Caribbean islands, colonial style towns, and a mountain interior on the west. Considered as one of Latin America and the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets, Honduras is world-famous for its archeological sites, including 3,000-year-old Mayan ruins and the mysterious rediscovered city of Copán.

You will soon discover that the country’s richness comes from the warmth and hospitality of its people. You’ll notice that no matter where you go or with whom you visit, the people of Honduras will always be interested in getting to know you and will will invite you to stay and share their home or a meal. Honduran cuisine is varied as each region has its own unique culinary dishes (from seafood to fried plátanos, frijoles, and tortillas, and a wide variety of colorful, tropical fruits). This means you’ll learn quickly about Honduran food and how Caribbean and Latin American cuisines are combined. Sharing some mealtimes with your family is an important part of daily life.

The beautiful “five blue star” flag can be seen in Independence parades, local celebrations or carnivals, and soccer games. As soccer is the main sport, you can find a soccer team in just about every village and town. If you’re interested in other sports or activities, or just want to enjoy the local scenery during a leisurely swim, the Honduran environment is the perfect place to do so.

Year and Semester :

The school year runs from February through November, with a vacation for Easter, national holidays, and during December and January. You will attend classes in either the morning or afternoon, with courses in language, sociology, math, art, and natural sciences according to the school’s curriculum. School uniforms are worn and teachers change rooms while you remain with your classmates in one central room. Attending school is an integral part of your experience and is the best way to make friends and to get to know everyday life as a Honduran teen. AFS Exchange Students are placed in the junior or senior year, based upon academic record. Students placed in senior year are required to do community service projects, which gives students and you the opportunity to meet and help people, and learn about the community.

While students here are serious about their studies, there are plenty of opportunities outside of school to get to know your new friends. Teens like to hang out in groups, watch movies, or go dancing. AFS Honduras also provides three orientations during your stay to acquaint you with the country’s life and culture; and one of the most exciting orientations is held at the ancient Mayan City of Copán.
