6/4/2007 - Our First Batch of Students - July 2005
AFS started in India to promote the school exchange programs for Northern Hemisphere (YPscNH) in the first semester of 2005 with the assistance of the US Embassy, some consultants and old returnees from the 60’s who went to USA with AFS. At this time, AFS focused on the YES Program scholarships in New Delhi, Pune and Ahmedabad. As a result, 40 students went abroad to USA, Norway, Switzerland and Italy.
By the second semester of 2005 Ashish and Elisabeth Khokar, consultants for AFS IP at that time, promoted the YPscNH among schools from Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and New Delhi. Essentially, the YES Program scholarships were promoted and as a result, 43 students went abroad to USA, Italy, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Japan.
That same year in October, AFS International appointed David Crespo as Country Development Director for India. By the end of October, the National Office for AFS India was constituted and activities to promote the school year program were initiated; mainly the YES Program scholarships were announced in Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune and New Delhi. As a result, 3 students are already in Japan and 45 students are going in Aug./Sept. to USA, Germany, Brasil and Switzerland.
