11/7/2007 - “Smile with AFS”
“We will miss the workshop! We will always remember what we learnt about Gandhiji and a few words in English that you taught us”, said Gita and Dipika, two girls from an orphanage. They were among the 15 girls who participated in the workshop, “Smile with AFS”.
We, the returnees of YES NH05 and participants of NH07, Ahmedabad Chapter conducted this workshop, for girls between the age group of 8-10 years, from 24th to 26th May,2007.
The workshop was done, to give the girls a chance to enjoy and learn new things that they probably must’ve never done before. Our team of ‘Smile with AFS’ wanted to bring out their talents and self-confidence that would help them in life. Of course, our main goal was, to make them smile.
The three days agenda included activities like “fun with colors”, “let’s learn about our national hero- Gandhiji”, “I know my good habits and I can act them out for you”. They also had fun – watching a movie, going out for lunch, and playing games at Fun City, City Gold. They just couldn’t stop smiling!
We know that ‘Save the girl child’ is an important issue in our country. We, the youth need to work towards this cause. By doing this workshop we wanted to bring a smile on the faces of those little girls from the orphanage and spread awareness about how important the issue of ‘girl child’ and increasing sex ratio is.
It felt wonderful to make those little girls smile, we developed such a strong bond with them. It was hard to say good- bye.
